This week I would like to look at how the quarterback run game, and how it can be used in your RPO concepts. When you get into the red zone forcing the defense to defend 11 becomes vital. When you can force one of the defensive players jobs in a run/pass conflict that becomes even better for the offense.
In the last few weeks I have broken down over 7 hours of film on my RPO Film LIBRARY. Here are some of the concepts that I thought might interest coaches. Some of these are not RPOs, but I am going to explain what I would do to make them an even better concept.

Unbalance QB POWER/Fast Screen
This was a nice wrinkle that was ran by Auburn in their bowl game earlier this year. Even though it is not an actual RPO I have shown you how I would do it (Diagram-1). I love the use of unbalanced formation and using a box count system to determine where the ball should go. Auburn sees numbers to the fast screen and takes full advantage of it for a touchdown.

Unbalanced QB Trey/Fast Screen
The next time Auburn was in the red zone the aligned in the same unbalanced formation, but this time they motion the H-back into the box (Diagram-2). Because Memphis aligns 3 defenders for 3 offensive players the advantage goes to the QB run game. This time Auburn run Trey with the guard trapping the 3-technique and the H-back leading up to the linebacker. This was a great play because Memphis was so concerned with getting beat on the fast screen again.

QB ISO POP
Probably my most favorite RPO is the concept diagrammed below. Duke catches Indiana not being aligned correctly to Dukes 3x1 personnel group. Because the weak side safety does not rotate over on to the H-back it becomes an easy throw and catch for the quarterback. The quarterback reads the conflict defender being the outside linebacker. He plays run and makes the read very easy for the quarterback (Diagram-3).

Bounce-QB Draw
When playing a team that plays a lot of man to man in the red zone try using bounce motion to confuse them (Diagram-4). The read is very simple for the quarterback. If the linebacker vacates the box run the ball. If he stays in the box throw the screen to the running back. Duke runs this to perfection for an easy touchdown.

Unbalanced-Fly Flood
I have seen a lot of spread team run the fake fly into the boundary and hit the H-back on a big play, or throw the check down to the fly sweep player (Diagram-5). The different twist to this play is after the quarterback fakes the fly he also fakes QB dive. Auburn does a great job covering the H-back, but the safety gets his eyes caught in the backfield and the quarterback is able to throw the post route for a touchdown.

Conclusion
These are just some of the ideas I have had over the last month. If you want the actual film then you should check out my RPO Library. I link is listed below.
Our program has had a lot of success making it to 4 section finals, and state 3 times, and 1 state title in the last 5 years. You can find all of our running and pass play diagrams and video that we run in my Spartan Spread System. I also have made an eBook that shows all of our RPOs that we run in the unbalanced formations that I have shared with you.
